Sealing Air Leaks for More Efficient Heating

Autumnal breezes are beginning to blow with hints of the winter winds that are soon to come. Is your house sealed against leaking out warm air and taking in the cold? Sealing air leaks can save a surprising amount on your heating bill, and with the right tools, you can do it yourself.

Your two main weapons against the cold will be caulking and spray insulation foam. Look for places where two surfaces meet--especially doors and windows-- as well as cracks and gaps, and places where piping comes out of the outside wall. Don't forget to check your basement and attic for leaks, especially in the foundation. Caulking is perfect for smaller cracks, but large gaps will need to be filled in with the spray foam.

Here's a video with more tips, including instructions on how to choose what type of caulking to use.
