Preparing Your Lawn for Winter

Did you know that preparing your lawn properly for the winter can be crucial to having a healthy lawn in the spring and summer months? Proper fall care can help the grass to beat out weeds that don't thrive in autumn and can also strengthen the roots for healthier grass in the spring.

Although the specifics of your lawn's care depends on what kind of climate you live in, some tips include:

  • Keep fertilizing into at least September--later if you live in a cooler climate.
  • Continue to water your lawn through autumn right up until the winter in order to maintain an adequate level of moisture in the soil for the grass to thrive.
  • The sooner fallen levels are removed, the better. Leaves not only block out your lawn's access to sunlight and air, but can also create a good environment for fungus to grow, which may threaten the health of your lawn.
