Nothing lasts forever; many parts end up needing to be replaced. If you have a bathtub with a shower head, you might one day find that the shower diverter that diverts the water flow from the bathtub to the shower head, needs replacing. If you pull the knob and hardly any water comes out the shower head, that's a sure sign that it's time to replace the shower diverter, and maybe even the tub spout as well.
Replacing a broken diverter is a simple enough project, which you can do yourself with the right tools and instructions.
