With winter comes cold temperatures, and cold temperatures mean drier air. Colder air doesn't have the capacity to hold as much moisture as warm air, which means it doesn't lend as much moisture to your indoor environment either. That's why you have to slather on the lotion and lip balm. But since the warmer indoor air could hold more moisture than it gets in winter, the humidifier was invented to replenish the moisture in indoor air.
