DIY Tips for Beginners
Going out and building Do-It-Yourself projects can be a great way to save money. There are, however, some serious drawbacks to not hiring professionals. As we'll address in a future post, DIY projects are the cause of major and minor injuries, including falling from ladders and cutting hands with knives. Additionally, since you don't have much experience in this regard, you'll probably make some mistakes, which can cost you time and money. DIY isn't for everyone.
In fact, DIY projects aren't enjoyed by most males, with only a quarter reporting that they do enjoy it. Still, a whopping 75% report that they'd rather go after a project themselves than hire a professional to do it. What is it that compels men to try and do these projects themselves? Perhaps it is the lure of savings, or maybe the satisfaction of seeing the product of your labor.
If you're still determined to consider DIY, as you well should, let's address the top 6 DIY tips for those that are just starting out.
- Consider the true savings/costs of DIY. You may be saving by not hiring someone else to do your labor, but in a way you're paying with your own time. Additionally, your skills are likely to be inferior to the contractor's, so you'll likely get a lower quality result. Bear these factors in mind when going forth with a DIY project.
- Double check electric wirings - or maybe hire a professional for them. This is especially true if you just wired a socket and the power keeps going off.
- When applying wallpaper, put paste on the paper rather than wall first for better results.
- When accepting help from another person with painting, make them edge as well as use the roller! Painting comes with the tedious work as well as the easy work.
- Plan your renovation around your other activities. For example, if you're planning on running a marathon on Saturday, Friday is probably not the right day to lay laminate floor or use a hand saw. Not only will you be exhausted, but you'll also have cuts that will burn when you get sweaty.
- Get help! This may be "Do-It-Yourself," but if you're a beginner, having guidance from a handy friend can make all the difference in both your learning and the final result of your project. The moral is, don't be afraid to ask for help.
These tips demand two basic tasks of you when setting out on your project. First, consider whether or not this project is worth doing yourself. Second, if you are doing it yourself, get a tool-savvy friend to lend you a hand. Pay them back with whatever you and they deem necessary, but getting good help can make a huge difference in your experience of DIY.
