Replace Your Moldy Caulking

If the caulking in your shower has acquired a lot of mold, it may be time to replace it. The process is actually pretty simple, and doesn't require a lot of tools or special skills.

To remove the old caulk and clean the moldy areas, you will need:

  • a utility knife
  • a utility scraper
  • all-purpose cleaner
  • a nylon-bristled scrub brush
  • disinfectant wipes

The utility knife will be used to break the caulk's seal with the wall, and the utility scraper will remove any caulk that does not easily peel off. The other tools will be used to clean up the mold.

To apply the new caulking you will need:

  • a tube of shower caulk
  • a knife and a piece of wire
  • warm water in a small bucket
  • a towel or sponge

The knife and wire will be used to open the tube of shower caulk and the warm water will be used in the process of smoothing out the caulk. You'll want something to wipe the excess caulk onto, like a towel or sponge.

So give it a try and see how easy it is to do it yourself! Just remember to let the caulk dry for at least 12-24 hours.
