Tips to Rid Your Kitchen of Fruit Flies

You go to bed with your kitchen clean, but one morning you wake up to a colony of fruit flies, buzzing around all your cooking spaces. Where do they all come from? Fruit flies can be a nuisance, so today we're going to address how to prevent them from entering and how to get rid of them when they do.

Despite your best efforts, fruit flies are sneaking in through openings in house - the door, windows, etc. - as well as hitchhiking on overripe fruit. Here are some tips for preventing them entering:

  • Seal Doors and Windows
  • Cover Compost Bins
  • Cover Fruit Bowls

Still, it's likely that at least some will get through. once you have a problem, use these solutions to kill off the flies:

  • Store-Bought Traps
  • Vinegar Solution - 10 to 20 percent vinegar, the rest water in a bottle or jar
  • Vinegar and Dish Soap - jar with vinegar and a touch of dish soap, cover with plastic, and poke holes
