How To Restore A Weathered Deck

If your deck is looking weathered and worn, you might not necessarily have to replace it. As long as the deck is still structurally sound, restoring it might be a better option for you. With the right tools, you can do the job yourself. This video from thisoldhouse.com has detailed instructions for every step of the process.

First, you'll have to strip the existing finish off the entire deck and railings, and sand all the surfaces. Then you'll need to check for any nails or screws that are loose and any gaps or cracks that may need to be filled in with caulking.

Then the deck is ready for two coats of Deck Restore, or other paint that's designed for finishing decks. Be sure to let the first coat dry for 4 to 6 hours before applying the second coat, and wait 3 to 5 days after applying the second coat before replacing any outdoor furniture.
